| Hello Brad: It was really great to find you had a website. It took me back to the good old Hants Grand International days at Ringwood in England when you were up against Wolsink, Noyce, Rond, Everts and other great names like that. Also, Farliegh Castle for the GP which unfortunately they dont run anymore, nor do they run the HGI. Do you ever get to see any of the riders you used to ride against as you must have make loads of friends when you were in Europe. I used to ride a little bit and read you book you had out in the late 70s, it helped some. Well id just like to end up saying a big THANK YOU for those years of enjoyment I got out of watching you career unfold and winning the world championship, all be it a little bit late (nearly 2 decades.) Thanks from an old fan Ian Ginn. |
Ian, Yes those were the days. Farliegh was one of my favorite tracks. Havent seen any of the riders that you mention, I live here and they live there. Thanks for the support through the years. Maybe Ill be back in England in 2001 for some vintage races. Brad Lackey |

| Is this the same brad lackey that live in pinole CA and use to ride the hills down by the bay?? Many, many years ago! Gino Scolari Pinole CA |
Yo Gino, Yeah, Pinoles my old Hood. Use to ride the Bay and The Hills behind P.V.H. Come on, it wasnt that Long Ago. Brad Lackey |

All proceeds from this event goes to The Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Burn Unit of Akron Childrens Hospital. We have a great time racing and a lot of fun is had after the dust settles. We would love to have you race with us. Hope to see you in June. Thank you, Ray Martin | Ray, Thanks for the chance to come out to Ohio and help the kids its still to early in the year to know my full schedule. Check back with me around May. Thanks, Brad Lackey |

| Dear Brad, My book arrived, it has some "dog-ears" courtesy of the postal service, minor, but its only a little better than the one Ive owned since 1982. I think a padded bag would work a lot better. Remember with your autograph in the front, these things will turn into collectibles. All the best, Chris Higgins |
Chris, Thanks for the info. Please send the book back and I will send one in a special envelope just for you and change the shipping for the future. Brad Lackey |
|
| Dear Brad, It is quite a coincidence that I was reading about you today then discovered your website tonight! I got here from Rick Siemans website. When things get slow at our bike shop we bury our noses in our awesome collection of old motorcyle magazines. I was reading about the physical fitness testing of motocross races in a 1980 issue of Cycle Magazine
.you were totally awesome! I have a snapshot of you sitting on a moped near the start line at Road Atlanta, must have been 79 or 80. Thank you for thrilling me with your racing all through the years, you have been a great inspiration to me. You would like some of the old bikes I have kicking around. Among others I have a Yankee 500 twin, an Ossa, a Montessa and 250 and 500 BSAs. I ride an original 59 police panhead on the street. Thanks for the great website! Best wishes, Gerry Wood Six Mile SC |
Gerry, Talk about a coincidence. My son and I were just talking about that issue of Cycle Magazine a day or two ago. Brake out those vintages beasts and well see you at the AHRMA vintage races. Brad Lackey |

| Hi ya Brad! Man did your website bring back a flood of memories. I remember back in 1976 or 77 at Phoenix. You were playing putt putt golf with Tony D and someone else. My friends and I had come down from Denver to see you race. Not sure but I think you were riding Huskys then and my friends van was painted up like a Swedish flag, LOL and it had the Husky crown on front of it. You commented to us that you like the van. Man for a 17 year old kid I was in heaven. My hero had spoke to me! Is there any chance you will be doing some Vintage stuff in Texas? Would love to see you ride again. Observation! The old racers from the 70s and 80s seem to be a bit more open with their fans and treats them better. Im not whining, just a viewpoint. Gotto go now so keep it sideways. Gordon Rich "Gordo" |
Gordo, Thats what the website is for. To bring back those good M.X. memories. At this time Im not sure about the AHRMA 2001 race schedule. Check it, maybe Texas is in there. The 70s & 80s guys are just normal Joes. Sideways, Back at ya! Brad Lackey |

| Hi Brad; I was amazed t see your web-site as I was just surfing around the other night. It brought back so many good memories of my youth and the early passion (addiction ?) I had for motocross. During the early 70s I lived in L.A. and went to junior high and high school with some pretty hot riders; Greg Robertson, Kenny Zahrt. Not bad for these guys to have factory rides when they were freshman in high school. I remember the Mid-Valley CZ team with Greg Robertson, his brother Jeff, Ron DeSoto, and Bob Hershey. How about Billy Payne, Tom Rapp, Bryan Holcomb, Bryan Kenney, Mark Blackwell, Bob Grossi, Mike Runyard the list goes on I remember Maicos CZz, DKWs, AJSs, Montesas Huskys. It was a sweet time. My first ever race I went to was at the Dunes (Shadow Glenn course) and you raced the new Kaw in the Open class. Your picture was in Cycle News that week and I was in the photo watching you pull a wheelie out of a corner! The early 70s were great for mx. My life focused, after moving to northern Calif., around Hangtown, the USGP and the Trans-Am series. I did a lot of photography work in that period and was lucky enough to get pit passes to Hangtown, Sears Point Trans-Ams, and the USGP at Carlsbad. It was great. Also, I have lucky enough to live overseas in Europe and see motocross there. Anyway, thanks for the warm memories. You were bad. You were the man. You were a true champion and I have the utmost respect for your efforts in taking the hard road to win the World Championship. It would have been easy to stay in the US and race. By the way, if you are looking for some vintage photos, try looking up Steve French Photography in Corning or Willows CA. He did some of the best Cycle News photos. He might have some of you. Best regards, Rex Sacramento, CA |
Rex, Sounds like you get around almost as much as a racer. Some of those old guys still ride and race. I had the fun of duking it out with Billy Grossi and Tom Rapp this year at a couple of AHRMA Nationals. Thank you for all the good words and thoughts. See you at the races! Thanks for the photo tip. Brad Lackey |

| Dear Brad, I was look through the net looking to see if there was some info on my uncle Gaylon Mosier. He died before I was born so I never go to meet him. I try to get as much things about him as possible. He was my dads brother, Fred Mosier. If you could e-mail me back I would really appreciate it, hopefully you had a picture or two you could send me, or possibly call 1-573-336-8725. Again it would be great to hear some things about my uncle. Sincerely, Nolan Mosier |
Nolan, Please e-mail me back your address. I have a photo to send you. I have tried to reach you at the phone number listed many times. Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, I just found your site today. I just missed seeing you in So. Cal at Glen Helen! Let me say first that you became the reason I continued to race back in the early 70s. I wish I could have met you back then. I first raced a DKW 125 and then a CZ250, if I remember right a 74, the first year with the coffin tank. The CZ got stolen in 78 or I would still have it (maybe). I never made it to the Pro ranks, although many of my friends believe I could have made it. My most vivid memory of you in person was at Lions drag strip near Long Beach, CA. The year must have been 72 or 73. I was night racing under the lights and were doing a jumping contest off the big "ledge" they built right in the middle of the straightway. Anyway, you went flying off that thing on your CZ and came down vertical on your rear wheel, bending the rim badly. I was right there on the side of the track, that was boss! Thanks for bringing home the World Championship, that accomplishment is appreciated by many as Im sure you are finding out. I hope to meet you one day, see you at the races! Tom Calvet |
Tom, Those were the days we used to race 3 or 4 days a week back then. It was the proudest day of my life to bring the World Championship back to America. Thanks for all the support. Check the AHRMA Vintage National schedule for next year and check one out, I should be at most of them. Thanks, Brad Lackey |
|
| As you asked, I have been checking into rebuilt Zabels. Also checked out the MTH motors as well. The VMC sidecar importer in England is my contact, and I am waiting from a friend in Belgium also. VMC says not to get a 620 Zabel, but he can get rebuilt Zabel 685cc and 70cc for approx $2200 plus shipping. The buck to English pound is very good right now. He also said that the MTH motors in 630cc or 650cc he can get at about the same price, they have good low end, but not as much run out on top as the Zabe. They are a little cheaper on parts as well. Richard Myers |
Richard, Thanks for the Hack info, at this point I think our money has gone a different direction, so we will have to wait. Glen Helen next year maybe a bigger hack show I think would be good well talk. Thanks, Brad Lackey |
|
| Greetings, Would you please put me in touch with Ed? Id like to discuss 125 CZ tuning. Great to see you getting involved. Hope to see you come east next year, would like to take rider class. Im another 45 year old guy with a old 380 CZ who recalls how grand life was then Thanks, Tom Long Stockton, N.J. |
Tom, Flying Flanagin Jrs # is 925-676-4520. We should make it to the East Coast next year. Its still Grand! Brad Lackey |

| I had written you awhile back. I know your busy but I would like you to reply to this and post it on your web-site. When are the modern promoters going to realize that they are not promoting the sport by building outdoor "supercross tracks". I have just gotten back into riding after 20+ years. I asked around for a track to ride and went to where everyone said. The damn thing is supercross and was harder than hell to ride. In the "old days" it was about going WFO. Today its to technical and if we are able to promote MX. The tracks need to be more suited to beginning rides and to attract those like myself back to MX they need to mellow out the tracks. I have two kids and a house payment and need to be at work on Monday. Plus, if I allow one of my boys to get hurt the wife will pull the plug on racing. Im sure this is the feeling of most mothers out there. Hell, look at how many pros have been hurt in the last few years in supercorss. Do you see this in the outdoors NO! Every time I visit this track I see someone hauled away in the ambulance. I suggested changes to the promoter and he said he was going to make changes and did. Its now even harder to ride and more dangerous. As a rider and parent I realize the dangers of MX, but think its stupid to put obstacles on the track that can only be navigated consistently by experts or pros. It only takes one short or long landing on a double to ruin your day and hopefully not your life. We flew far and long in the old days. But didnt have to worry about where or how we landed. I guess while Im at it. For you guys who think the block pass is cool. In the old days it was called being cut off and usually lead to someone getting his butt kicked after the moto. What about giving the guy racing room see who is truly faster, not dirtier! When in doubt, pin it! Bill the old spode! |
Yo Spode, Where you been? I raced on 10 tracks just like you want last year alone and I missed 8 others. Its called AHRMA. No stupid jumps, good safe jumps you can pin it on and great tracks all over the U.S. and local as well. And real racing on real bikes with your 20 year break and my 18 year lay-off its where to go for fun and racing. See ya at the races! Brad Lackey |
|
| Greetings Brad, received your MX book, lots of great info. This e-mail address is at my mates place. Hope to see you in the future in the land of the greak white shark. Kind regards Dave Trengove Port Lincoln, South Australia |
Dave, Give the Great White a kick in the ass for me. Would love to come down under for a MX holiday. See you at the races, Brad Lackey |

| Got my training video today. Thanks. Enjoying it greatly. Sincerely, Barry Ely |
Barry, Thanks, Im glad youre enjoying the video. Brad Lackey |

| Hey Bad Brad Lackey!!! Man its really good to hear from your camp!! My name is Jim Stowers. Im 39 years old and I remember the days of iron men and real motocross. When I started riding back in 75 you were all over the magazines as we followed the racing in Europe. It was magical in my mind reading the articles of the giants of motocross battling to every moto and who was my hero? Bad Brad Lackey!!!! You were the icon of every American guy who loved motocross and proudly rode his dirtbike. Many times when I have spoken with my buddies at work about the grand days of grand prix motocross, I tell them about the time as an airforce brat in 1979 I went to the Belgium grand prix. I was invited by my boss to go and stay overnight. A friend went with me and man o man we were excited. The racing was incredible. Those big 500s rumbled and roared to powerfully it made the ground shake! Roger Decoster was there! Heikki Mikkola! But even more awesome our hero Bad Brad Lackey was out there giving the Euros hell!!!!! At one point my buddy and I were at the apex of a left hand uphill slanted sweeper turn and every time you came around we jumped up waving on our hero, but blasting through you slid out on the hardpack right in front of us. Getting up you looked at us and we excitedly encouraged your effort to get the bike up and going again. Mostly I remember the moment I saw the look in your eyes. Id never seen anyone look so focused as you were that day. You were truly a young mans hero. Since those days of youth it seems time has been racing by faster each year. It has the effect of turning time back to know you are still around and still BAD BRAD LACKEY!!! Its been cool to chat and I will stay in touch through your website. Take care!!! Sincerely, Jim Stowers |
Jim, You picked one hell of a race to attend in the seventies. The Belgium G.P. was the best you could see. Glad you could make it and the sound and smell will stay with you forever if youre like me. Thanks for all the support throughout the years. The days are going by much faster now. Riding vintage races this year has brought back many old memories for me and some of the old Bad Brad has shown himself every now and again. Thanks, Brad Lackey |

| Hey Brad, I have been a fan of yours and Rogers for ages and since I just recently moved back to the States from Brussels. I wanted to drop Roger an e-mail with a couple of questions and observations. Does he have an e-mail address like you? Thanks. What are you doing with yourself nowadays? (This is besides running your on-line business?) Also do ever keep up other riders from the GP days, such as Garrett Wolsink, Harry Everts, Adolph Weil, Willie Bauer? Thanks in advance. Dan Drislane |
Dan, I dont have any info on the Roger Decoster e-mail address. The best bet is call Suzuki in Brea, CA. They can help. Really no contact with the guys you mentioned but a few of the old guys get together once in awhile. Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, Been meaning to check out your site for awhile now. I thought it is so cool! I found it heartwarming to read the messages to you. The love and respect people have for you is amazing. It must be great to know that everything you did was noted. It brought a smile to my face when you say that you gotta be an old timer if you know who Brad Lackey is. I have been watching scrambling (motocross) since the 60s in England and the G.P.s in Europe since the late 70s. And for me that period up to the mid to late 80s was where MX was at, back in the day. I have photos of you from Farleigh Castle and some of the Euro GPs and theres Bad Brad getting crossed up and roosting for al hes worth. Thanks for that Brad I dont want to dis anyone here and know the likes of Hannah, Johnson et al were exceptional racers and dominated in the U.S. But I have always had a greater admiration for you and Danny The Door La Porte and Magoo Chandler for coming over to ride in the world championships competing against the best riders in the world. When I heard that Magoo got really badly injured, I cried. I appreciate what Supercross is about, but I felt like one of our guys from MX had been stolen away from us. The attraction of world championship motocross racing is the men and those exotic, unattainable machines. Big men with big hearts. The courage and the stories and the anecdotes it must have been incredible to been a part of shaping MX history in that time. Brad, why I originally was gonna put pen to paper was to ask you when you are gonna come over and ride the international class at Farleigh Castle in England? Also while youre here you could do one of your training classes. Youll love it here a good old fashioned grass track and a lot of people who would be pleased to see you. Entries to the event would not be a problem and I know the organizers well enough to know that you would be most certainly welcome. I know plenty of others who gladly would put you up if you needed a place to stay. So what are you waiting for? We even have the original GP start gate. Check out the report in VMX mag on Farleigh, respect is due, Brad Lackey 1982 World 500 Champion (good as gold) regards, Gary Dunne, Wilton Wilshire England, Hopefully sse you at the races, Caio. |
Gary, Thank for the respect, I think you summed it up just right. 60s, 70s and 80s GPs were the shit. Photos from Farley? Any chance of getting a few copies? I have maybe one photo from there and I think I won the GP three or four times. Trying to come to Britain in 2001 for vintage race. Please send info on the event and organizers names, e-mails or phone. Thanks, See you at the races. Brad Lackey |
|
| Hello Brad, I meet you at the first Vintage Iron World Championship's at Glen Helen. I partner and I put on the races for Rick on Sunday. I had you sign to large photos of you racing at a trans-am race held in Phoenix, AZ. I read you article about racing with Jaroslav Falta recently and I was wondering if you might know how to get in touch with him ie; mailing address, e-mail or phone number. I have a photo of him also that I would like to get signed...Thanks for any help. Clay Setzer |
Clay, Falta will be at Sears Point in April. You can personally hand it to him and get it signed. The race is April 29th. See you there . Brad
| Brad, I have always been a big fan of yours. I had your poster up in my room for many year's. I would still have it up in the garage if I could find it. Which brings me to ask you if you have or know where I can get old vintage posters and or old vintage video's from Carlsbad early 1970's. I raced pro from 1974-1977 I got to race with you a few time's, one was at Axton Va. I had a picture of us sitting on " the line " ready to go out for practice, it is now a poster in our garage. You can E-Mail if you know where I can get any old posters or videos. Thanks, Mike Mckinney |
Mike, For the posters check out AMS Racing. The web site is www.amsracing.com. Gary Semics has a video The History of MX, but thats all I know about. Go Vintage! BL
| Brad, I have a copy of your training manual, and noted that in comparing the contents to todays current crop of training books, most of the principles and techniques advocated some 19 years ago are still applicable today! The manual was certainly ahead of its time. Has there been any thought on maybe producing a training tape offering the same instructional format? Bill Duke |
Bill, Check my web site www.bradlackey.com and click on the BADCO store. You can purchase a video with everything you want. Enjoy, BL
| Dear Brad, First of all thanks for sending your techniques book to me so fast. I had to lay it down with some encyclopedias on top of it to get the corners uncurled, but it's great now. On the cover, you have a 1982 photo with you aboard your Suzuki. The Fox shirt was quite popular then.....I think it would be again. Is there any chance you could talk Fox into printing a similar style again, they could call it the " Bad Brad Collection" or something like that. I race a Y2K Suzuki and would really like one. A graphics company recently came up with "The Bomber" to recognize Mark Barnett's proud history. You should have the same. Didn't you have an earlier book with you crossed up with a KX 420 on the cover? Cheers, Chris Higgins |
Chris, Sorry about the US Mail. Fox has not realized the vintage market. You should write them a letter telling them what you think. Yes, the old cover had me on the KX but we updated the cover when I won the championship
| Hi Champ, In my books you will always be the champ. I was riding in the 70's and my great dad gave me my first bike in the mid 70's a Honda Mini trail. after that i moved to Cr125's and and lately i restored a 73 cr250. the vintage bug hit me. I have old mags with your pics on it (cycle magazine) and reading on your accomplishments in Europe. I was wondering if you also still get to see Marty Smith (125 champion) 1975 and Bob Hannah. Anyway congratulations on your accomplishments more specifically being in the hall of Fame and I just wanted you to know that there is a Brad Lackey Fan out here in asia. Fernando Lopez Manila, Philippines |
Fernando, thanks for always being there. You will have fun with the vintage thing Im sure. I will tell Marty Smith he has a fan in the Philippines also. Thanks, Brad
| Brad, not suprised you get a ton of e-mail.so i will make mine short. I followed your racing during all my youth.44 years old now i still remember coming home from school to get cycle news to see how you did.the world championship was unreal.i regreat that i never got to see you ride. hannah, johnson, bailey, barrnet, laporte all great riders but brad lackey will always be the first and the best. Thanks for racing all those years thanks ,thanks thanks. Richard. |
Richard, Im glad I brought you such good memories and thanks for the kind words. But, Im not dead yet . Will be riding the AHRMA Nationals again this year at Sears Point. Check my website calendar. BL
| Mr. Lackey, My name is Jonathan Lackey. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have always wondered if you we are somehow related. Frankly, I found this website by just searching the name "lackey". When I was little, an older cousin had a shirt type decal with your image on it. Since then, I'm 35 now, I'm curious, that is all. Family is from Youngstown Ohio, and Jewish. Related names, are Kessler, Podonly, Comisar, Merchy, Pollock, Geffen. If any of these rings a bell, it would be cool to hear from you. Jonathan | Jonathan, I dont think so but you never really know unless you do a search. Most of our family comes from around Little Rock, Ark. Brad | |
| Brad: Great interview at MotoWorld.com. Two questions: 1. I've got your "techniques, training and tactics" book and love the vintage photos. I'd always assumed that the training book was not as entertaining in this respect, but you mentioned in your interview that both books contain lots of vintage race photos. How's the training book compare to the first one in this regard? 2. I'm slowly getting organized to write a motocross book on the year 1973, which I consider to be the most eventful in mx history (first USGP @ Carlsbad, first American GP winner (Bimbo), invention of long travel suspension, invention of the monoshock system, introduction of the Honda Elsinore, First American Trans-Am win (Weinert), initial 125 world cup and us series etc.). I think it'd be a hell of a read. Can I pick your brain someday on some of these topics? Kevin Conner |
Kevin, Techniques, Training and Tactics is the book with the most visual information. However, the Championship Training book has much more in depth information about training. If you are serious about racing professionally thats the one you need. I for when you get your book together send me a copy and the bill, I love that stuff! Thanks, BL
| Hi Brad, I was wondering if you remember riding a Kawasaki 250 silver aluminum tank adjustable rake. I use to ride for Kawasaki R&D and got to ride this beast. I will send a few pictures to jog your memory. Brian Kirby. |
Brian, Just barley because I hate 250cc bikes. But Ive seen some pictures also. Please send anything you have for my archives. Where are all the old R&D bikes? BL
| Brad, I know you have tons of e-mail to sort through, so this will be brief. We talked about you and your bud buying my Honda/EML sidecar at Glen Helen, but I have not heard back from you. To let you know we have Sidecars calendared at AMHRA races this year, if it works out to everyone's satisfaction then the entire AMA Sidecar Championship will move to AMHRA events next year. If you still have an interest let me know one way or the other. Thanks Richard Myers |
Richard, Pete and I were real excited to hear about the sidecars coming to AHRMA races for 2001. At this time we are to short on time to commit to anything else but I hope to bum a ride from you at one of the events. Thanks for your help- BL
| Brad I have been collecting unusual bikes -if you know what I mean for 10 years Everybody thought you got your bike. Someone has been telling the world you have got it. Jobe tells everyone Silvain got his 250 - DiStephano says that his went back to Suzuki US. Howertons got sold But the word is you got yours- what gives Surely if it went back to Isberke factory for collection you would know Roger shipped out of Belgium 12 mths ago If you can trade info - I will help you as I buy from people who want to sell not from people who want stuff back Gary |
Gary, I have some of my bikes but not my 82 Suzuki and I know where some stuff is. Maybe we can help each other. Keep in touch, BL
| Hello Brad. I just came across your site and thought maybe you could help me out. Back in 1979 I purchased a brand new 1978 CZ 125 MX type 511 that was gathering dust at a shop I worked at. This bike got me into racing and I was totally hooked.Well, that was a long time ago and for the past few years I have been searching for one of these bikes. Well, I just found one that is brand new and never ridden! I am know looking everywhere for an articles or pictures with Gary Jones riding the bike. I can remember reading a test over and over that was in a magazine and for the life of me I cannot remember what magazine it was. Well, to the point of my writing to you is, can you have Gary email me and let me know what magazine it was. No just joking! But really, do you have any idea where I can find any info on Gary Jones riding the 78 CZ 125. I understand he won a CZ world champion riding one. Back in 79 when I was racing the CZ and everybody else had the new CR's and RM's the CZ was not much of a match but after reading the test that Gary did I remember being totally pumped. Now that I have my first motocross bike again (brand new) I would love to get some neat reading material. If you could help me out in anyway I would really appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day. John in New York |
John, buy all the new motocross mags and look inside where it tells who works for the mag. Contributing editors, test riders, etc. and you will find Gary that way. BL
| Brad, I am glad I was able to get my friends in the Czech Republic in touch with you. I hear from them that you had a great trip. Harold Parks Minden, NV |
Harold, Thanks again for helping out it was a blast from the past. Now they are all coming here in April for Sears Point. Thanks, BL
| Hello Mr. Lackey. My husband, Bill Kuzel (an old-time fan of yours and ex pro racer) has just inherited a 1975 CZ 380 Red Frame that formerly belonged to Bobby Harris in New York. He would like to obtain more information about CZ's. Would you be able to shed some light (owner's manuals, etc.). He is in the process of trying to restore the bike. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you, Lisa Kuzel for Bill Kuzel |
Lisa and Bill, You did good! One of Bobbys bikes it has some history. Contact: West Coast Motorcycles, 727-541-3158. They should be able to help you. Good Luck, Brad Lackey
| hi brad, i found your site on espns site. i grew up in your era you got 4 yrs on me. i raced mx for 8 yrs didnt make the nationals. but i went to a lot of them. i still have a pair of brad lackey mx boots that i used back in the mid 70's. also i have a home movie with voice from a race in ravenna ohio national. do you remember my friend ray weir who raced with you down florida last winter he rides a cz he's a big guy about 350lb. he loves his beer & old bikes.do you ever talk to roger d? if not our friends are tight with pastrana, maybe we can find your suzuki. a also if you need any audio equipt.let me know. talk to you later. rick tatano greensburg pa. p.s. are you related to any lackeys out this way ? |
Rick, Big Ray Yah I know about Beer. Just talked to R.D. last week and Mikkola also. Thanks for the help with the bike but dont bother Pastrana about it. No Lackeys that I know of. Also, what size are the boots? Brad Lackey
| Dear Mr. Lackey, do you remember a tall lanky blonde guy named Gary Tipton who lived in richmond calif. in 197?-80? I think he rode a Bultaco then. Well, I hope you do, because I remember you being at my grandmothers house there as a 5-6 yr. old! My name is Dave Tipton, and I'm Garys nephew. Gary and his brother Charles both took their Cali brides and families to Oklahoma to be farmers. I became an mx nut early when I got to watch Gary ride, and got a 1980 yz 50 when I was 10. I never got to race, but I had 647 acres, motocrossactionmag, and my imagination! You were my imaginary competition and friend in many a hard fought moto on my "tracks" around the farm. Soon, I got a 1985 yz80 and progressed to a skill level I knew was competitive, but my father couldn't afford it. Time moved on, I got my drivers license, and quit riding- In 98 I moved back to Oklahoma to live with my friend on a ranch. We live 5 min From a good track, and one visit had me hooked again! I got a stock 96' Kx250, and signed up beginner. I had bad luck in my first 2 races, last and DNF. But I practiced, and trained, BMxed alot, and started winning every race! Now I am up to an Intermediate pace, and so is my roommate! He had a full track built on the property, and we have alot of resources for success, I just need to save up and get good equipment to match my skills. I am determined to make at least one main event on television, Probably Arenacross. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know you were an inspiration to me and thanks. If you are ever in oklahoma and would like to stop by a first class mx effort we would be honored. Even if you get a flat on the I-40, call us!!! later. Sincerely, Dave Tipton and Dustin Sperry Local Effort Racing P.S. I a vintage nut too, and if you can get ANY cool works stuff, especially kx and yz , I will pay well. |
Dave and Dustin, Sounds like your having fun out there in Homa. There is an AHRMA National MX in Oklahoma this year not sure if I can make it. Ill keep your phone # so if I find any good KX and YZ stuff- See Ya, Brad Lackey
| Brad, Would you know where I could find video's of GP races,orTransAMA races from the 70's or 80's. Thanks, Allen |
Allen, Ive never seen GP or Trans AMA videos for sale only private stuff. Try video section in Cycle News! Good Luck, BL
| Hay Brad Just run a cross your web site COOL it brings back the good old day's. I moved from calif. in the 80's to MO.I saw you ride at saddleback you rode CZ's, carlsbad GP's you rode KAW's I believe you won the over all that day But the day I remember most was at Indian Dunes if I remember right you & Tony Distefano were testing KAW Proto 490's the bike's didn't have kick starters I push started your's or Tony's but tony broke the frame on his in the sand woop's that day was that you I pushed BRAD? THANK'S FOR THE MEMORIES BRYAN |
Bryan, Days at the Dunes you must be old as dirt! Well, thanks for the Kaw. Help. That bike went on to win the 1972 championship with a little help from my friends- BL
| Brad, I was just read your interview on the motoworld? web site. Yeah baby, I remember. In those days I rode the open bikes, 465 Yamaha's. I NEVER liked the small bikes-125's or 250's. Everything you said in the interview about riding the big bikes is dead -nuts accurate. There is nothing!like rollin' the throttle on a big bike and feel the thing try to pull your arms out of there sockets. It's an incredible rush along with a certain amount of "respect" for the mount when it comes time to shut' er off at the end of a fairly long straight and turn. (or hang onto the damn thing after you launched it into orbit off a jump!) I am a small guy, 5' 7" 145 pounds, starts at a race were always the big highlight for me because I could scorch the dirt into the first turn.(small package, big motorcycle) It was a bit un-nerving maybe for some of the other riders to see a squirt like me on a big bike. I always told myself "if I can just hang on and keep this pace up for a few more laps I know I can win" Although not ANYWHERE near the caliber of rider you are I did manage to win a few here in the Northwest. My brother raced also but he lived and breathed 125's and actually became very accomplished as a pro here in the Northwest, Jess Allen Dirks. He would always just shake his head when it came to my attraction to large machines capable of pummeling the operator like a rodeo bull! But he would be front and center when it was my moto, either because he was really supportive of my efforts, but probably more towards the truth; he was there to see just how long it would take before the bike would bite me. Yeah I remember your championship. I remember thinking, "Damn, what nuts!" All the riders from way back that I admired, David Bailey, The Magoo, Brad lackey, Chuck Sun, Marty Tripes, Bob Hannah, and many others, but your the only one to take that 500 GP. It's one thing to win a championship here state side, it's a totally different gig to go to Europe and take their Holy Grail. These days I ride for pleasure on a ol' TT500 yamaha (yeah I know, it's a four stroke) in fact when me and my buddies go riding if someone was following our trucks & trailers , it would look like we were heading to a vintage bike meet! Nobody in my group rides anything newer than about 20 years! I am glad to see you are doing well and have aged gracefully. You probably receive lots of similar fan appreciation messages, but I have always wondered what happened to that guy? Being vintage (40-ish) myself it was important for me to acknowledge what you did and to say thanks for the memories. regards, Russell E. Dirks Happy Holidays PS. two amazing things have now happened this year, I got a chance to email you and I got to pinstripe one of Evel Kinevel's Harley Davidsons. really. no bs. |
Russell, Tell me you got pictures of you on Evels hog! Vintage racing is alive and fun in the Northwest. Check the AHRMA schedule and well see you at the races! Brad
| Hi Brad, First I wanted to let you know how much fun I had at your mx school in alabama in sept. My name is John we talked some I am the guy with the works cz and also the one taking the photographs. I am trying to document the history of my bike . Any ideas ? Thanks ...............................John |
John, Old magazines have photos of all those bikes and guys riding them. Find all of those you can and put something together. Also, contact JAWA- CZ in New York. See you in Bama, BL
| Hi Brad. I'm the guy in Alabama on Labor Day weekend that gave you the postcard of the 196? CZ250 that you wanted to take to the CZ factory so you could show them what you wanted. I saw the pictures from the trip a website. Lucky you! So, any luck with finding the bike? If so, do you plan to race it or just keep it for a collectors item? I think I actually bumped bars with you in the first turn of one heat at that race in Alabama. Cool!!! What a great track that was except for the dust. Will |
Will, Thanks for for the photo-card. My old factory mechanic is working on finding a 360 twin pipe for me so maybe this new year Ill race it some. See you in BAMA 2001, Brad Lackey
| Hi Brad, Just wanted to send you a note to congratulate you on your A.H.R.M.A. championship. I know it's not the most prestigious championship that you have won, but I bet you had a lot of fun winning it. Thanks for taking the time to stop and talk with me and kicking my ass on the track! Hope to see you at Sears Point in April. Thanks, Dallas Nyblod # 2Y |
Dallas, Well thanks and yes less pressure is more fun. Sears Pint will be really good this new year. Big Party, some euro riders.. Falta maybe.
| Hi Brad I have just found your website I am from England and I remember watching you at the British G.P. at Farleigh Castle in wiltshire around 79/80. Your book is something that inspired me, at the time i was racing a 250 Husky and although I was no champion your professional outlook to the sport influenced me and my friends. Brad i also want to thank you for having the guts not to take the easy option of staying at home and making a nice living in America but to travel to Europe for years in unfamiliar environments and strange languages and realizing your dream. All the best Brad keep "crossin it up " from Mark P.S who were your heroes and what was your favorite track Europe/American? |
Mark, Farleigh Castle is #1 or 2 on my best GP Track list. Watching DeCoster/ Mikkola at Farleigh is the perfect combo. Thanks for the kind words, BL
| Brad, I have recently started wearing my chest protector under my jersey. I'm not trying to start a trend, although I always thought that it looked really cool. I'm doing it because I feel safer, and because of that, I ride a little looser and faster. My problem is that my protector is a Fox Roost 2 and it stretches my jersey so tight and high that I look and feel like the football player and I feel more restricted than is necessary given that there are slimmer protectors on the market. I'm ready to buy a new one and would really appreciate your advice. Does your chest protector restrict you? Actually protect your shoulder with some type of shoulder cup? It looks like it may. What kind do you wear? Do you have any opinions on what type of chest protector/shoulder pads would be good to wear under the jersey? Thank you for your time. Ride on. Chris Howren |
Chris, Go to a sports store with used equipment like Play it again Sports. Hockey pads are what you want. Small cups good roost protection or try a new store Hockey dept. A larger jersey also would work. BL
| Brad, I am doing a in-depth project for school. I am looking for details on the early GP races and particularly the one you won. I am having some trouble finding information in the likely spots. Anything you could give me I would really appreciate. Thanks, Kenny PS, did you ever find your GP bike? |
Ken, get a copy of my book, it has all the stats and photos. Its on the web site. Motocross Techniques, Training and Tactics. No GP bike yet, Thanks, BL
| great to see you back racing. you and jimmy weinert and the other kawasaki racers were always my inspiration to want to ride and race .....................Steve |
Thanks Steve, we are trying to get the old Jammer out again! BL
| Brad, Just heard about your web site. Looks good. I first saw you at a Trans Am race at Delta, Ohio (can't remember the year). I was just a little kid collecting autographs. I had seen your picture on Cycle News with the dove on the crossbar (being from a rural midwest area this was pretty radical and cool to me). I asked you for your autograph and you said "sure - who else have you got in this book - have a seat". This really impressed me since most riders would gladly sign but not really talk to me. Just wanted to say thanks for the memory! Mike, Edon, OH |
Mike, Those were tough days in Ohio in the 70s. From your email sounds like you grew up right! Thanks for the support in the early days, BL
| Brad, Super Hunky, aka Rick Sieman, still needs help finding two issues of Dirt Bike to complete his collection. I had some of the ones he needed. He needs photocopies of March 1983 and Dec 1985. If you have these, or have any friends also growing long in the tooth that may have them, drop me a line. Walter Nash |
Walter, I will check my mags for those issues. There is a guy @ Sears Point every year selling old motorcycle mags, he might have what you are looking for! -Brad Lackey |
|
| My name is Ken Link and I'm writing this without my wife knowing, there's a reason for that. I was hoping to surprise her. She has two of your actual G.P. jerseys from Carlsbad Raceway. The first one is a yellow Suzuki jersey with a number "2" pinned on the back. I'm sure there's not to many of those around. The second one is a white FOX jersey with number "1" on the back. The name Lackey is in cursive (handwriting). I've been in motocross for 27 years at one level or another and I was impressed with these jerseys when I first saw them. Anyway the purpose of my letter. You have always been her favorite rider period! I was hoping you could write her a letter or e-mail. She's always asking me if your riding or doing anything. Possibly a schedule for the coming year in SoCal. I also would like either a catalog or order form to order a couple shirts and sweats. Thanx, Ken & Mary Link |
Mary Link, One of my Carlsbad connections told me you still have 2 of my jerseys. Well, I want them back! Just kidding Thats good that you still have them. You didnt sell them because they are very rare only maybe 2 or 3 were ever made. If you sleep in them every night, thats ok to. Anyway, check my web site for my calendar also check the AHRMA site for the MX race schedule. Thanks, BL
| Brad: I wrote you yesterday and since then I've had a flood of memories from that trip to Czechoslovakia in the spring of 1970. I believe there were 12 of us and ten were Americans and two were from Canada. The two that I remember well from the USA were you and Sonny Defeo from New York. What we Canadians found really humorous was how you guys from stateside were so hooked on Coca Cola. As you may recall, we traveled to Strakonice to see the factory and while returning we traveled by bus away across to another village where they had Coca Cola. The only place for miles that had any and you guys bought all that they had in the store. Do you remember the Czechs trying to persuade you that their Caffola drink was the same as Coke? Then how about them taking our passports as soon as we entered the country. Didn't hold us back from sneaking out and partying till the wee small hours in Prague though. When we got back we would sneak in and in the morning enjoy a good breakfast of cold fish on a hangover. I'll bet you remember that!! Finally we convinced them to try and make scrambled eggs for us, which was a semi disaster, but anything was better than cold fish for breakfast. How about the cold water for our showers and the waxed paper that was supposed to be toilet paper. But in spite of all of this we had a great time over there. Do you remember when three of us took down the little Russian flags that were hung by our hotel windows in Strakonice. Do you remember how serious an offence that was and the meeting with the officials at the factory board room. A fine of $2.30 American currency and a stern warning. Remember Sonny's tape deck and him trying to buy batteries for it? They went dead within about five minutes because you couldn't buy descent batteries there. I remember the people there and how friendly they were and how sad it was to realize that they lived in those conditions every day. I remember how much I appreciated the freedoms we take for granted in North America and how I felt like kissing the ground when I returned home again. I still have all of my memorabilia from that trip Brad. The little CZ towel and facecloth, the little banners form Czechoslovakia, tickets from the streetcar in Prague and a whole bunch of other things. Those were great and wonderful times that we had when moto cross was young and innocent and people in North America would say Moto what? How far the sport has come since then. I retired from racing in 1974 after winning everything that I could in Canada. The 500 class twice, the 250 class twice, and the 125 class once, along with dirt track, enduro, and an ISDT medal in 1973. I was too old to try and take a crack at the European circuit but I followed your successes and congratulate you on your achievements. It was 25 years before I would ride another motorcycle and last year a friend gave me and old KTM that he had from 1976. One thing led to another and I just took delivery of a 2001 Honda XR400R that I'm going to ride in the over fifty class Hare Scrambles circuit this year. I wish now that I'd kept active in the sport but sometimes one's interest wanes when over subjected to a specific sport. I just wish I was 25 again and had another chance square off with you on the track one more time. That would be fun, wouldn't it. Please let me know your schedule for 2001 and if youre ever in the northeast or near Toronto Ontario let me know. Ron Keys |
Ron, You have a better memory than me. I do remember you Canada guys. When you found the site, did you check out the Czecho trip I just took Oct. 2000. It was great to go back 30 years to the Hotel Dudak in Strakonice and have a pevo with Paulanka. Remember him? I remember the coke thing but it was Pepsi only in Czecho. And the disco in Prague. But I dont remember the Russian flag deal. The battery thing I will always remember because no tunes or no American tunes anyway. The people are still great and this April. Two Czech riders along with Falta, are coming to race the AHRMA National race at Sears Point by San Francisco. Try and make it, you can ride the 50+ on a CZ. We should be able to find one for you. Congrats on all your race wins and you could ride 40+ with me at Sears Point and go for it one more time! Thanks for all the lost info . Peace, BL
| Brad, I am currently restoring a Kawasaki KX 450 F12. Is it possible that if I had this machine at the Mid Ohio event in 2001, you would be willing to take a lap on it before or after the race. We have been a Kawasaki dealer for 28 years now and this would be most memorable lap down memory lane for many of us to witness and experience. Thank You for any consideration, Tom McCallister . East End Cycle |
Tom, Im not sure about my race schedule at this time. But if the Mid- Ohio people dont care, sure no problem! Hope to see you there BL
| dear brad, thanks for coming to mid-ohio for vintage days. I took my 16 yr. old son to watch you race.he was really impressed, more so than with modern racing super cross etc. he now has an idea of why I always tell him how pro racing has lost its flavor. the trans-ama series in my opinion was the best in u.s. . I started following your career in 69, I remember seeing a story about you in a mag living in czecho, in a shack by a creek with no electric or running water. I thought MAN,this guy is serious. how many of todays stars would do that. I was 9 or 10 then and was able to learn and dream, about europe thru reading about your racing experiences have always thought, leno should have you on the tonight show to show people the only American to win the 500G.P.title. thanks again for racing with AHRMA,it would be nice if they had a MASTERS series for M-X like they do for golf. I bet it would draw bigger crowds than todays pro races do. ron schill | Ron, Yea those were the days. I just returned to Czecho in Oct. it was great. Please send a letter to the tonight show people, who knows? The masters series would be great but I think the golf guys arent as beat up as us. Thanks, BL |
| Brad, hello once again. I saw your web site address in dirt rider magazine and thought I would try to touch base with you. The last time we talked you had some kind of deal going with some Hollywood guys .Did anything ever come of that? I read most of your web site mail and if you are going to be in the Ohio area let me know .There is plenty of room at my house and I have a serious practice track in my backyard . Did you keep up your interest in flying ? Did you ever get the chance to fly a helicopter ? Cav has retired too and lives somewhere down in Tennessee . -Dan, Ohio |
Dan, Whats happening? Im going to take the 5th on the Hollywood question for now. Went to Ohio in July for Vintage Days East. Bought a Ulta- Light.. Had fun for awhile but Lori made me sell it! No helicopter though . Keep in touch, Brad |
|
| BRAD, GREAT TO SEE THE WEB SITE. I RECALL YOU RIDING AT ESCAPE COUNTRY IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA. ' BOUT 1972. YOU AND DESOTO WERE RIDING WORKS KAWASAKI'S AT THE TIME. 490CC I BELIEVE. I REMEMBER BEING IN THE PITS, YOU COULD GO THERE IN THOSE DAYS, AND WATCHING THE RIDERS MEETING. BILLY CLEMENTS WAS THERE AS WAS AT LEAST ONE OF THE GROSSI BROS.THAT I RECALL. YOUR KAWASAKI WAS UNDER WRAPS BUT WE STILL CHECKED IT OUT. EVERYBODY WORE THOSE WHITE BELL DRIVERS CAPS. I MISS WHAT RACING WAS BACK THEN AND YOU WERE A MAJOR PART OF IT TO ME. MY BEST, MARK DAVIS |
Mark, Thanks! That was the good old days of racing! See you at the races, BL |
|
| Brad, did I see you at Broome- Tioga last weekend? John Bowen |
John, Must have been my double! - BL |
|
| Hi Brad, Found your web site and boy did it bring back some great memories. I too was a moto cross fanatic back in the 70's and early 80's. I feel that was the renaissance age of moto cross. The tracks were outside and the races went on in all kinds of weather (remember the 1977 Trans AM at Unidilla). I was wondering what was the best factory bike you rode ? Keep up the great work. Joe |
Joe, Yeah the old days were good! Best factory bike probably 1972 Kaw far ahead of its time! Thanks, Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, MY friend said you gave a kick ass school on how to ride a grass track. Do you have a schedule? Do you ever come to the North East? Happy Trails Mike |
Mike, I am done for this year. Check the website in the future for next seasons schedule. - BL |
|
| Hey Brad-----------Wuzzzzz Uppppppp? Its great to see one of my all-time favorite racers on the internet, thanks for the site. Anyway my question is concerning Danny "MAGOO" Chandler. Do you know his whereabouts I had heard that he crashed ending his career prematurely, and, yet another guy told me in a chat-room that he was operating mountain bike racing school in northern California, any truth in ether of these?Any info would be appreciated........................PEACE, Jeff Wilson |
Jeff, Magoo is in the Foresthill area of Northern California and yes, Danny crashed in the Paris supercross in 85 and broke his neck. He is now wheelchair bound. He does put on MX schools and promotes BMX and MX races in the NORCAL area. Thanks, - BL |
|
| Hi Brad, You probably don't remember this, but in 82 I wrote you a letter asking you to "win it for us old guys, but win it for yourself." I was so surprised when I got an answer from you, from Sweden. What I meant to say about the old guys--was not that you were old--but that I felt old (I was 25) when I lined up at the starting line. You were the one who got us hooked on MX. In 72 the Trans-AMA came to Houston, at Rio Bravo. You roosted and wheelied from corner to corner on the Kawi450, and we had to do that too. I scanned a part of the poster for that race, and am gonna get Kinko's to make a full copy to send to you. I had been wondering if you had been riding or had hung it up, and saw your website. My wife says I am crazy to still ride--gets in the blood. Hope you can make it to Houston someday, Rio Bravo is still running. Best wishes, Mickey Quirch |
Mickey, You're right about the letter, but I do remember Rio Bravo. That would be great to have the poster. Thanks for thinking of me, Brad Here is the address: BADCO, PO Box 118- 4425- C Treat Blvd. Concord CA 94521 |
|
| Brad-I am a fan, and do not want to rock the boat, but didn't Danny Laport win the 250 World Title just before you? - Wally Onieski |
Wally, Danny had a great year but the 500 races were over on 8-8-82 and the 250cc GP's had 2 more to go. So I do hold the most prestigious title in American MX. The first American Motocross World Champion and still the ONLY 500cc champ to date.... almost 20 years now. No boat rockin here.... thanks, Brad |
|
| Brad: Your pictures really took me back to when I used to race in Northern California in high school; and at Hangtown/Plymouth (my favorite track) in particular. I used to work at with Lump and Carl at Penton West in '74. Where is Carl now? Man I thought he was the smartest guy I had ever met. I saw you race at Namur in 1979 at the 500 GP. I was proud to be an American. Now I'm trying to restore a '69 Zed 360. Thanks for the memories. Hope you are doing well Marc Warburton |
Marc, I just saw Carl in Ohio at the Vintage Days East. He was at the Penton tent. He looks great and still smart. He lives in Washington with his wife and 2 boys... Just finished my 70 Zed 360 it's looks KILL! Thanks, Brad |
|
| Moe, I am interested in the C-1 photo on the site. Are there autographed versions of this pic? If so I would love to have one....are they more $ than the non signed ones. Also, Is the image of Bad Brad and DeCoster, available as well? KC |
KC, Yes all photos are autographed and C-1 is $25.00. All A-B-C photos are available. Thanks, Maureen (Moe) |
|
| dear brad lackey, I was there in Belguim and Luxumborg in 1982 to watch you get your first World championship. There has never been a faster 500cc Motocrosser in the world. | Dear, MXHONDA.... U- DA Man! Thanks for the vote of confidence!- BL |
|
| Hey man Just came upon this web site and thought I'd say howdy. I met you at Sumners in Fresno when you were getting your Harley worked on by Marsh. You signed my hat with the PAL message. I had a great time. I rode a CZ had really long hair and tied a brass bell on my handlebars. You are one of my heroes. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES Randy (Tire Pauls Buddy) |
Randy- CZ, long hair, your style is GREAT! BL |
|
| Brad, It has been great to see in Cycle News that you are back racing (and having fun too). I remember the first time I saw you at Saddleback Park during a week day. I had my Hodaka 100 and you were on a CZ. It must have been about 1968 or 9. You were play riding with another guy on a CZ, doing wheelies and amazing me with your ability. I was hooked. I was so shocked when I saw you ride down Matterhorn. I have followed your career since then from the Superbowl of Motocross to the Nationals and Carlsbad GP's. I even wrote to you in Europe to encourage you on your championship quest. That must have been about 1979. You even wrote a postcard to me, which I still have. This year I started racing again after a ten year absence. I am having a great time with the Oldtimers! I hope to see you at the races. Don Wallace Redlands, CA |
Don, Back in the day saddleback was great! Have fun with the oldtimers . Hope to see you at an AHRMA event! - BL |
|
| Brad, good to see you on the web, just found your site, many years ago when you were writing for one of the mags, I asked you a question about sidecar cross in Europe. Your reply has kept me involved in the sport till this day, trying to get it to grow here in the U.S. check out my efforts if you have time at asca-racing.com yes, I am a vintage guy as well, will be dragging out my 71 Macio next year. Take Care Richard Myers |
Richard, We are talking in my camp about a side car class at AHRMA next year. Hope we put it together! BL |
|
| First off my wife and I thank you for putting on a great show in Al. over Labor Day. I think it inspired me to get another ride and start racing AHRMA events in the near future. The only thing missing was your "love dove" & peace signs on your bike. thanks again &hope to see you at the races real soon. Rick |
Rick, I had a great time in "Bama"- John did a great job w/ the track see you at the races Brad |
|
| Brad, I know you have probably heard many times about the first time I saw Brad Lackey race. Well you are going to hear it again. It was at the very first Hang Ten Carlsbad grand prix. I am a contributor to the Maico brothers web site. I remember seeing Maico forks on your Kawasaki before you went to Husky. Your move to Husky is what I believe is the time that you turned the corner to become the champion that you are. For the sake of our web site, will you at some time provide us a opinion that we can quote, about Maico's, and the influence that this brand had on the industry and sport. I will be racing my 79 250 Maico magnum at the AHRMA grand prix vintage class next year and hope to see you at some of the events. Personally and off the record, do you believe that the promoters of supercross have made a freak show of the sport with all of the vertical action? I remember when it was important for a mx bike to handle well in a turn. Thank you for your time and all the best! Best regards Harold Koehler |
Harold, Thank for the kind words and Ill see you next year at AHRMA 2001. I just look at supercross as a different sport thats the only way you can live with it! Thanks, BL |
|
| Hi Brad, You might read this you might not...I just found this page and it brought back many fond memories of a time in my life when everything was pure and simple, I was only 7 or 8 my father was a sales man for BMW in Oakland and Weber Motors.. He somehow got me an autographed picture of you from a magazine or a poster. I no longer have it now. but hearing your name made me think of the good times ..I wanted a motorcycle more than I wanted to breathe but my mother would not have it..My father always told me when I was old enough I could get my own but I would most likely have to be living on my own..Until then he would bring home little 50s that I could beat up and he could make some excuse that my mother would believe, that would enable me to ride it for a few months until he had to get rid of it..Well my father passed away 1 year ago and your name sparked a time in mylife that was very important to me and of course I Idolized you as "The Man" watching On Any Sunday as a child being kind of confused but loving the riding parts. There is no need for you to respond, I just thought you would see an interesting story as I am sure you have heard many times before.. Oh and by the way now that I am 28 ,, well 29 tomorrow... I am on my third dirt bike. a 99 CR250, previously two yamaha's I still love this sport more than anything. Nothing else matters when your on that bike.. Thanks for the inspiration in my younger years. Scott Murray |
Scott, Thanks for the kind words! See you at the races! Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad: I'm glad to see you still like riding. I saw you on a episode of Bike Week last year and you didn't seem to interested in riding. This was disappointing to an admirer of your accomplishments. When I was in my early teens you were the man! I followed your career and your training manual (I knew it by heart) and I actually became a pretty fast rider. Unfortunately I had to choose between my apprenticeship and racing. You couldn't make a living in Canada racing bikes at that time so the job came first and I had to settle with trail riding and the odd Hare Scramble or Enduro. In 1994 I got a chance to race out of a local Suzuki shop and I trained all winter, went to Florida and got second in the Alligator Enduro. Not much to a California racer, but to a guy from Canada who loves racing and riding that was one of the highlights of my life. In 1983 it was rumored that you would be riding a Can-Am at the Toronto Supercross, I always wondered what happened with that? Anyways just wanted to say thanks, your example highly influenced and kept a young teen on the right path. Thanks Brad and keep on riding. Kevin |
Kevin, Started riding again this year after 18years off- Glad to influence any young guys with motorcycles in their future! Good luck, see you at the races BL |
|
| Brad i met you at laurelville ohio in 1973. I was 15 at the time i was taking the chaplin and harris school. you were riding a kaw with a husky tank. I had my picture taken with you that day by my mom. you were my idle and still are. I turn pro the next year and raced till 80. I live near high point in pa. at that time the main track here was Appalachia lake. you had the track record and i beat it by 2 seconds it was written in cycle news that year. that was one of my major accomplishments. I was friends with mike runyard and mike hardwickalso chuck mccall. he was also at laurelville the day i met you in 73. tripes was there i remember he endoed on the short straight before the big down hill. a knee injury has left me on the side lines but my memories are still there hope you are able to read this you were an inspiration to me. the kid from cal that wheelies threw the turns. I have that picture in photo cube along with john desoto and peter lampue mechanic. I still have the write up in cycle news to . if you would like to read it i'll down load it you. any thing you could send me i would treasure it just like everything else you are the man. sideways was you dogs name that is my email address name. - gaylord plants |

| Brad, great to see you involved with the vintage seen! It has been a dream for many of us mortals to race against (behind) someone the caliber of yourself. Just to ride at the same time on the same track would be such a "bad"(awesome) experience! My question is, do you know of any other riders of your era that might also be considering coming out to play on Sundays? Also, how many years do you have left in the 40+ class? I want a shot to be roosted by the best two years from now! Thanks, Brad |
Brad, Tom Rapp, Billy Grossi are some of the guys coming out. I have 3 more years in the 40+ then were moving up to the big guys 50- See you at the races, BL |
|
| I just wanted to say "Thank you" for the effort you put into the web page so that I could go down memory lane for a while. You are truly an amazing person from the era when Men were men and went to whatever lengths it took out of heart to win, and truly respect the commitment and effort you put into racing that paved the way for so many others to come. I remember the poster of you doing the first cross-up, as well as the "Dove" on your CZ. Sincerely, Thank you, John Moore |
John, It makes me very happy to know that some people know the effort I put into my racing career . Thanks, Brad Lackey |
|
| Bad Brad Lackey I don't believe it. Nice web site. Like so many others who have contacted you I also raced in the 70's. I used to follow all the stars. I'll never forget as a kid (I have the Pic to prove it) I saw you take the RED proto type Kawi off the log drop off in the back section at Elkhorn. What a site. Year I believe was 1972. That was an awesome track. I live in Colo now and race vintage cars. Cobras. I got burnt out with the big jumps etc. I'm looking to pick up a Monarch 125 for my collection. Remember those in 1973? You were one of our heroes Brad. Hope to see you at the races in CO. Take Care Karman | Karman, Just got back from Colo. Dont know if we bumped into each other or not. Monarch 125, Sounds good! BL |
| Brad, First off, let me say what a thrill it was to see you race again! My dad had a Kawasaki shop in the early seventies and he had a poster of you hanging on the wall. Every time I went down there, I used to sit on the bikes and stare at that poster and pretend I was Brad Lackey. Ive been racing in the Open Evolutions class on a Bultaco Pursang 370 and a Maico 440 for about five years now. Although, not nearly as fast as you. I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration to get out there and go for it! Ive been having the time of my life racing and just bought my son a 1977 XR75 so he can start racing too. Vintage racing is such a great family sport. Its too bad that modern events arent more like vintage events. Thanks again, Scott Mc Alister |
Scott, Next year at Glenn Helen AHRMA National we are working on a big evolution race the same weekend. So hope to see you there. Thanks, Brad Lackey |
|
| Hey Brad, Its really nice to have a former World Champion (who hasnt dropped off the face of the earth) make himself accessible to us slow guys. I have two questions for you and Ill keep them short. Did your 1982 Suzuki escape the crusher and if so do you still have/ ride it? And, Who did you think was your toughest or fastest Euro rival during the 70s? Thanks, Dan McLeod |
Dan, Havent dropped off yet. At this time I am trying to find out what happened to that bike. Maybe a little help from the public would help. If everybody gets together and emails Roger DeCoster at Suzuki asking them to get my bike back to me, it might work! I think my biggest Euro rival was both Roger and Hekkie for different reasons but both really wanted to win like me. Thanks, Brad |
|
| Brad, Hi
.. Just surfed in! Great to see your still riding. I hope we get to see you race in Australia at one of our vintage meetings one day. Bob Sydney, OZ |
Bob, We are working on that possibility . See you at the races! Brad |
|
| Brad, How are you? I grew up in Clayton, CA. and followed your career over the years. I was wondering if you had any photos of you on one of your CZs with the peace dove on the handlebars? You were the guy all the kids on the neighborhood copied with peace signs on our helmets if only we could have ridden as well. I was curious about the following: Is Jim Weinert still involved in Motocross? How did Steve Stackable die? What happened to Dick Mann and is there anyway to contribute to him? Thank you for all the great years of racing. You are a true champion! Tim Carlson |
Tim, Thanks for the good words. Peace dove photos are very hard to come by, Ill try to get one. Jim Weinert runs the family wreaking junk yard upstate NY. He was doing vintage a couple of years ago. Have not heard anything about the death of Steve Stackable, hope its not true. Dick Mann was operated on for throat cancer, but hes at the races each week doing well. To help Dick, you can purchase a Dick Mann t-shirt off my website. All the proceeds from the Dick Mann t-shirts go to Dick Mann. Thanks for the support, B. Lackey |

| Brad, Greetings from Costa Rica . We met, and you wont remember, in Bellevue, Washington in 1971. You and your brother came over to Buffalos Tavern "The Wherehouse". I was visiting friends at the Yamaha store next door and you and your brother unloaded the CZs and just, well, tore up our little practice track. Wed never seen anything like it. We (at the shop) thought flat track was the game until that day . You infected us all with MX. We met again in 1990 at the Masters of MX at the 500 GP. I had come down to wrench for J.P. but Ron rode instead and Doughty had the bikes totally prepped so I just cruised and enjoyed the moment. Jim introduced us. Best event I ever attended. Anyway, Jim and Ron referred to you a couple of times as "Partly" but wont elaborate. Whats up with that? Best wishes for the success of your new online venture. -Chuck |
Chuck, Well Bimbo and Ron arent exactly non-leaky, but believe it or not they thought at times I was a bit flakey or there for partly. I think they got it from Carl Cranke. Those were the days, Brad |
|
| Hi Brad, It was great seeing you again in Cycle News. Of all the motocross racers from the 70s, I think I must have pulled for you the most! Maybe it was your dogged determination and persistence in the face of what seemed to be constant bad luck, or maybe it was just your long hair that seemed to bestow me with something of a feeling of kinship. I remember reading a story you told about visiting Bengt Abergs house and seeing his world championship plaques hanging from the wall and that was all you ever wanted. From my early teens to my early 20s I would follow the race results from Europe and agonize along with you at what seemed to be another year of being close but no cigar. When you finally won the world championship it seemed that somehow everything was right with the world. I would be willing to bet your fans were just as happy for the world championship as you were. (well almost) Thanks for the memories and I think its great you and Lori are still together after all these years happy trails, William Sutton |
William, Thanks for all the support over the years there were some tough times I guess thats why my other nickname was darkcloud racing. Thanks again, Brad Lackey |
|
| Hey Bad Brad, Thanks for signing a shirt
. Ben and Brad Cornelius (my sons) brought it back for me as a surprise
from their weekend in Ohio!!!! Oh yeah, my boys and I still reminisce about the good ol days of dirt bike races
Zoar Valley
. I took the boys long before they were old enough to drive
they both had bikes and raced
. But oh, if only a sponsor
but we made lots of memories and it was time well spent. Ben is " the guy" who probably told you about his Ossa collection
again, thank you
have a great summer! Sincerely, Marilyn Cornelius Wellsville, NY |
oh yes, the memories are great! Get as many as you can, fast as you can! Thanks,
Brad |
|
| Brad, Met you at Mid- Ohio this past weekend. Thanks for coming! You were smokin on your CZ. Best Regards, Barry Ely |
Barry, Thanks for the support I wouldnt call it smokin I barely squeaked out the overall! See you at the races, Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, Hi from Rochester NY. My name is Frank Dovidio, Im 32 yrs old and a big fan of motocross, especially the vintage stuff. I have sent a picture of a bike I restored from the dead after purchasing it for $75.00, hope you like. I will be brief and to the point. Do you not agree that the AMA F ked up by killing the 500cc class? I also think that the so called sport of freestyling blows as well. You guys were the class who laid the cornerstone for what everyone has today to enjoy, so to you I raise my glass! Stay in involved Brad, the sport needs you, DeCoster, Malcom Smith, etc. A true fan, Frank Dovido |
Frank, Thanks for the toast! Yes, the 500cc class needs to make a comeback but well keep it alive in vintage racing until then BL |
|
| Hey Brad, Sorry our friend no longer has the shocks. I even tried to buy back the ones that I sold in Chehalis, but failed. Ill keep looking. Really enjoyed your photo gallery. Let me know if there is any other items I can keep an eye out for. Think of coming to Woodland MX park this winter for some fun in the mud. Races are from Oct. to Apr. Kelly Prociw |
Kelly, Thanks for the help. Let me know if you find a 1982 500cc Works Suzuki laying around. Thanks, BL |
|
| Hi Brad, Great to see your website. Just wanted to take time to talk to Americas only 500 World MX Champion. My best memories are the Carlsbad GP on the KX 450 but also remember at Indian Dunes when you smoked everyone in the 500 class. Then watched while you did the same in the 250 class on the CZ with the love dove on the handlebars. I still have my 72 250 CZ that a friend sold me for $200.00. Ive kept it for 30 years and rode at steamboat, also around town. Keep on riding, CZs rule! Best Regards, Mike |
Mike, Drag that old CZ out to the AHRMA National at Glen Helen Oct. 7th and 8th. See you at the races! Brad |
|
| Brad, Imagine my surprise! Im working late on a Friday evening. Spending some idle time lurking around the net and low and behold, theres Brad Lackeys website. I remember following your progress in the 72-74 time frame while I was working for my local Kawasaki dealer. CZs, peace signs, doves tapped to the handlebars and actual competitive Kawasaki Mxers. Im not necessarily talking about the aluminum tanked monster John DeSoto was riding (seems like you might have rode something similar, but memory fades) I am talking about the aluminum tanked forerunner to the limited production F-12MX. You know, like the picture on the first page of the original F-12MX Shop Manual. Brings back some serious memories. Glad to see youre still around and still involved in two-wheeled mototsports. Id like to get out and see you ride again sometime. Incidentally, Im in the process of restoring a 1973 F-12MX and a couple of 1973 F-12FX and a couple of 1973 F-11Ms. I guess I really cant get the "green" out of my blood. Thanks for making yourself available to the older generation of motocross riders who still think its ok to go out and play in the dirt. Keep on riding, Joe |
Joe, I remember those days. I think Peter Lampu rode one of those red tank F-12MX in the support class at the Trans-AMs and DeSoto. I rode the big bank 450cc Mr. DeSoto and myself are still doing it in the dirt as much as time allows. P.S. Just picked up a 1975 KX400 should be ready next season!- B. Lackey |

| Brad, Good to see you're alive and well. I'm sure you don't remember me, but I used to hang out with one of your neighbors, Brian Edwards when you lived with Randy and your folks in Richmond. Yeah, we were 4 or 5 years younger than you so, for the most part we were pests, but we did get to check out your dad's Montessa Cappra and other bikes in the garage. I remember going to a half-mile race in Santa Rosa with Randy, you and Lori probably circa 1971. I got to see you race several times and even raced against you at the Ramblers mini-bike races they used to hold on Tuesday evenings in the good old days. I haven't had a bike in 15 years, but I'm looking for one to buy here real soon. I don't expect you have time to respond to all the emails you get, but ifyou do respond to this one, tell me what's been happening with you and maybe where Randy hangs his hat these days. It was always exciting to root for you in the '70s, knowing that you were one of "us" Richmond boys and I've long since forgiven you for thumping me in the back of my head on the trip to the Santa Rosa half-mile. Take care, Mike Linan |
Mike- Sorry for the thump! The time is good to find that vintage bike of your dreams... Heard Randy's hat is in Vegas these days... See you at the races, Brad |
|
| Brad, Did you ever ride for Kawasaki? Thanks, Bob Allison |
Bob, Yes, I rode for Kawasaki 1972 and 73 and won the championship for them in 1972. Again in 1979-80, Finished second in the 500cc Grad Prix in 1980! See you at the races, Brad Lackey |
|
| Dear Bad Brad, I was looking to register the internet domain name of bradlackey.com, which is when I came across your web site. I remember when I first heard of you back in the late 70s. Being a kid at the time, I remember how neat it felt to learn that someone world renowned had the same name as me! I also happened to have been "dating" a girl named Lori at the time, which I believe, was your wifes name at the time. Anyway, I just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for giving me a reason to brag about my name as a kid. And, YES I will be purchasing a "Bad Brad Lackey" t-shirt. I just wish you made hats!! (with the B on the front and Bad Brad Lackey across the back . Hint, hint, hint) Take care, Brad Lackey |
Brad, You didnt say what your nickname was Dont tell me your middle name is Jean with a "J"? Sorry for stealing your web site. I probably just beat you to it! Lori and I are having our 25th anniversary this summer. A Bad Brad Lackey hat could be in your future! Back at you: - Brad Lackey |
|
| Hey Brad, I think it is cool the way you are getting back into riding with the AHRMA bunch. I was in Florida and saw you ride. I also am riding a CZ-400 in the 40+ int. class. Whats the deal with the forward mounted rear shocks on your bike? It has been a topic of discusion in the Missouri vintage club that I race in. I didnt think those were allowed. Are you cheating? Has it been brought to your attention before? Keep it on the pipe! Ron, Missouri |
Hey, back at you Ron
. Way back in the early 70s we experimented with laydowns reservoirs etc. The first guy they (AHRMA) checks is ME for sure! So after four wins they have checked everything 3 times so everything is legal. Thanks for your support- Brad Lackey |
|
| Hi Brad, It was great seeing you at the Dixon race. I was one of the many old farts that probably asked your for an autograph. It sure was outstanding watching you out there on the track. Your return is the best thing possible for promoting vintage racing. Id like to buy a shirt or two and one of your books. The order form part of your web site was flipped out when I tried to order. Can you send me prices and ordering information? Thanks much, -Randy |
Randy, The site is a "work in progress" we are still adding to it and getting it up and running. At this time, the order form should be working. If you have any problems please email me and Ill get you the product you are requesting. If you check back on a regular basis, we hope to offer more content as well as product! Thanks for your support- Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, Great to see you racing again. I was wondering if you might make it out to Colorado for one or more of the AHRMA Nationals? It would be great to meet and ride against you. Thanks, Van #23T |
At this time, I plan to attend both of the AHRMA Nationals in Colorado. As I go to different Nationals it is great to race with new guys. Hope you are in your late 40s not early ones! See you at the races- Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, Thanks for posting your e-mail address access on your website. Not many of my past MX heros are as gracious. Im Robert, as a teenage kid trying to "be like Brad" At the time, all the kids I raced with would wait every month for the race results to see how Lackey kicked some imported "euro-riders ass". What fun! What a great time to be a kid. Today as a 40 year old AHRMA racer, I enjoy the competition again. The Intermediate class treats me well. I usually battle it out on my Bultacco to a solid 7th or 8th finish. I may not win but I make em damn sorry Im out there . Still to this day, "trying to be like Brad" Tanks for the memories Brad, See you out there. |
Well, youre absolutely right, being a kid in the 70s was IT! The AHRMA races are a blast! Jump on up to the 40+ expert class and we can go the first two together! See you at the races- Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, Just a note to let you know that I am glad to see you back in the sport. Ive followed you since the early 70s when I started racing. Ive got a son (Brad) that races now. I guess it never really get out of your blood. Hope to see you race in Colorado this fall. Hope youre there. Best wishes from a BIG fan, - Steve |
Steve, Were having a great time with the AHRMA races. Plan on going to Colorado. See you at the races. Brad Lackey PS: Tell Brad Ill see him there! |
|
| Hi Brad, I like your site; I happened upon it by accident. I always wished that I worked with you in the old days. I was pulling for you because you were so determined to be the world champion. I admired your desire and quest to be the best in the world. As a concert violinist in my early life, I came to truly appreciate the meaning of excellence and the meaning of a virtuoso performance. I never cared for team sport, they make a poor substitute for individual efforts and rewards. - Gilles |
Gilles, Youre the man! It would have been a pleasure to have someone with a real attitude around in the day! Thanks- Brad Lackey |
|
| Hey Brad, Found your web site and you are right about the vintage part! You were an inspiration to me and I actually had peace signs on my CZ in your honor. I was extremely happy when you won the 500 championship and will always remember watching you at Carlsbad and Carnegie. -David |
David, Ahhh CZs with peace signs, now that brings back memories! Thanks for your support back in the day See you at the races, Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, I worked at a Husqvarna shop when I was in high school and we all followed your racing in Europe. Many times the highlight of my week was picking up the latest copy of Cyclenews to see how you did. You are an idol and a hero, thanks for the inspiration! -Derek |
Derek, Thanks for the support in the old days. Dont you think we need more yanks in Europe now? See you at the races Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, I saw a couple of your buds at Mid-Ohio last year (Preston, Christer, Jimbo and The Flying Hawiian) Wondered if you were gonna get out here this year. Maybe hit your old stomping grounds (Honda& Highland Hills, Delta, Mid-O-MX) Let me know Thanks, Chris |
Chris, We are going to Ohio (Mid- Ohio) if they let me in the (state) that is. See you there, Brad Lackey |
|
| Brad, I stumbled across your website concerning the Hollister Rally. Sorry I am not able to make it. Is there any way I can order some Tshirts with the Hollister Independence Rally emblem on it? Brad Green Bay, WI |
Brad, You may place your order for Hollister shirts by emailing brad@bradlackey.com. Please indicate size and include your method of payment so that we may process your order. Thank you, Brad Lackey |

| Hi, Brad. My name is Mark. My first Moto-cross race was in 1974 when I was 12 years old. I entered on a Honda SL 100.Not a very good bike, but I was willing to ride anything ! I just discovered your Website and ordered your book Motocross. I used to have a copy but It vanished (sticky fingered friends). Motocross in the 70s just seemed very special to me. I was a fanatic! I new all of the riders national numbers, factory teams etc. I have a 1978 Unadilla Trans Am tee-shirt hanging in my garage, Oct 7&8.On the shirt is a Honda # 2 (you ?) and a Suzuki # 24 (Mark Barrnet ?) I dont race any more I just play ride ( I bought a new YZ 426) with my 6 year old son. I still feel Moto-cross is the best sport around but I feel it has lost something since the 70s.I remember amore fun ,layed-back atmosphere, a sea of Suzuki TM 100s,So many brands of motorcycles it took skill to name them as they went by. Plain helmets, Leather pants or jeans, single jumps. My son Matt is 6 yrs old and a pretty good rider. I dont know if Im going to let him race. I dont like the jump crazy mentality, triples, doubles....If it was real MX like the old tracks I would let him but these new Supercross tracks scare me.(I dont want someone landing on his head)I have discovered that many of todays teen age MX racers are good jumpers but not fast on a real MX track. I can smoke them, until a big jump comes along. So Brad, how do you feel about some of the thoughts I've shared. I would like to hear what you think. My brother and I purchased 200 acres in upstate New York and I built a real MX track fast, off cambers etc. If your ever going to be in this area give me a call, Me and Matt could use some tips from a real MX racer. Thanks, Mark- Ridgefield, CT. |
Mark, Thanks for the book order. I think my thoughts on your note are about the same. The tracks with huge jumps are much more dangerous for young inexperienced riders than an old school track like Unadilla. Now your track sounds like the way it should be. Thanks for keeping real MX alive! -Brad Lackey |
