Hi Brad;
I've seen you a few times at various vintage events like Arizona and Holister. Glad to see you still kicking ass for 30 years! I read the section in your page about your trip to the Czeck Republic. I went there last winter and decided to return
in the summer for a cross country motorcycle trip. I plan on going in July, and need some contacts for renting a motorcycle for a couple weeks. It would be great to do it on a Jawa! Let me know if you have info of use for my adventure!

HI MARK- I HAVE A TEAM OF CZECH RIDERS COMING FOR SEARS POINT VINTAGE NATIONAL ON APRIL 28 AND 29TH. WILL YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND THAT RACE? IF NOT, I WILL TRY TO GET A CONTACT FOR YOU.
THANKS, BRAD
Dear Brad.
My buddy Tom McCallister emailed you about two months ago. He just finished restoring my 1973 F12 450. He asked if you would take it for a spin at Mid Ohio. We will be at Clarksburg, May 5. Hope you will be there. If so, hope you will consider riding it then. Tom has two 1974 KX 125's. We will be parked together.
HI GUYS,
SORRY TO SAY, BUT I WILL NOT BE AT MID OHIO THISYEAR. HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD TIME WITHOUT ME....
BRAD

Yo Brad,

Do you plan on putting on a MX school at Running Brand? If so I'd like to sign up.

Thanks,
Jody Miller
HI JODY...YES I WILL BE DOING A MX SCHOOL THERE. YOU CAN CONTACT JOHN GORMAN AT RUNNING BRAND...HE IS IN CHARGE OF ALL THE ENTRIES AND CAN SET YOU UP. LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN'T GET IN TOUCH WITH HIM. LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE.

Dear Bad Brad......Thank you so much for answering my husbands surprise letter. In the summer Of 1982 I was at Carlsbad for the grandprix and I was a loyal moto-x fan (my ex-husband Carl wilson) use to race so I had been
going to races since I was 15...1982 I was 25..I would sneek into the pits right before the end of the finals and waited for you to come to the pits..I got thrown out 8 times one year but still snuck in for the end..while I was waiting little Ricky Johnson was sitting on the tailgate and I new he was an up and coming pro someday..and he was so excited I asked him for his Jersey he couldn't believe it. I still have it....You finally came into the pits with mud all over and I asked you for the Jersey off your back..it had to be the one that you won the GP in..and you gave it to me..The #2 is still saftey pinned on the back, its yellow with all the iron on transfers are still there...You've always been my favorite rider!!! The next year you gave me the #1 white jersey with the name Lackey in handwriting on the back..Thank you!!!! I still wear them even if I go to a national or a supercross...Outdoor tracks in the old days were always my favorite..I also have David Baileys, Brian Meyerscough,Scotty Burnworth,Danny Chandlers jersey was stolen form my house at the county line in Malibu.Pete snortelands, anyways I thought if I ever had any boys they might like them .well I have 2 boys.16 and 17 who both have ride moto and love it..but I never will give them your jerseys..Hope to maybe drive up from Ojai with my husband to Sanoma April 29th just to see you and bring the jerseys. Think you will get a kick out of it.. May God ride with you always...Mary Link
HI MARY, THANKS FOR YOUR MESSAGE AND KIND WORDS. ITS ALWAYS FUN TO HEAR GOOD OLD STORIES FROM THE GP DAYS. WE WILL BE AT SEARS POINT FOR THE AHRMA NATIONAL AND HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT. SEE YOU THERE.
BRAD
Hai Brad, here a message from a die-hard motocross supporter from Holland !!!!
Nice to see you have an Web-page, who would have thought that I could contact you when I saw you grabbing the World Title, at that time I was on the age of 16 years and it was one off the most impressive things I've ever experienced. Mostly because of the huge croud, I think there has never been so many people on a GP since then, how many exactly were there, 30/40/50.000 ??? But also because of the fact that the World Title had to be divided between two suzuki-mounted Riders. I guess you were fortuned by Andre's attempt to take the long uphill in the second(?) moto right after
the start which he shouldn't. If it had come to a direct battle, who would have been the strongest? Certainly you spoiled the year for tens of thousands of Belgiums!! Nevertheless, my congratulations on your well earned World Title!! As the first American you are the true example of Patrionism. Right now I'm looking which European can grap an AMA-title again, after JM.Bayle, Tortelli? Smets? (that's when he gets so sick of all the changes the GP's are becoming now that he decides to go racing in the USA, and it's due to happen if things continue like now).
Now a question on you: In 1982 you rode the GP-of-Holland in NORG, on the very heavy-sand circuit in the woods with the start and finish line situated an a grass-field, rememeber? At that time, no all my life!!! I was supporter of a guy called Peter Herlings, he was also Suzuki-mounted, # 24, wearing a
Purple shirt, do you happen to remember him? His (and mine) story of that day was: As normally he started in the back of the field and than pulling his way to the front but this time in a RAELLY impressive way: he kept on passing and passing other riders to bring him in the one-lap-to-go lap in the 5th place, but then couldn't finish because he ran out of gas. In the second moto he became a bigger gastank from the Japanese (did it come from you?), only to crash in the start and crashing the chain in the crankcase, end. And in 1977(?) he already had experienced the same thing bet at that time riding on a Maico in 6th place also in NORG. And then came 1991 when we again had the 500-GP in Norg, now he was Honda rider and I was his mechanic. In the first heat he scored, due to a slipper, no points (17th) but we had the luck that leader Paul Malin crossed the finish at 40min,10sec. In the paddock we discoverd that there was NO gas left in the tank..... The second moto brought deeper hole's (whoops!, remember?) and leader Jacky Martens croosing the finish at 39min,40sec... ai ai ai, THREE!! long laps to go. My man Peter Herlings was in 9th position and I prayed to God, Jesus, Allah and Hindoe that he wouldn't DNF fot the third time in his career, and God (or the other supervisors) had listened, he crossed the line after 51!!!!! minutes of racing and thus whiped out all his bad memory's off the past.
I will bother you no longer, thanks for your attention, if you wanna have more GP memories let me know, I have plenty, from now and from the past. By the way, only last year I read an article on Andre (DeDe) Vromans for the first time in YEARS, we had never ever heard from him, I think he got so sick of losing the Title he turned his back to the sport, I am glad you didn't. See you, Greetings from Holland,
Arie Crooijmans.
HELLO ARIE,
THANKS FOR YOUR MESSAGE AND KIND WORDS. IT IS ALWAYS GREAT TO HEAR GOOD STORIES FROM THE OLD GP DAYS. AND YES, I DO REMEMBER PETER HERLINGS. HOW IS HE DOING AND IS HE STILL INVOLVED IN THE SPORT? AND HOW ABOUT ANDRE VROMANS? YOU SAID YOU READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT HIM LAST YEAR. HOW IS HE? I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT HIM IN MANY YEARS. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE DAY THAT I COME BACK TO HOLLAND, MAYBE TO WATCH A GP IN THE FUTURE, I ALWAYS LOVED THE TRACKS, PEOPLE, ETC. IN HOLLAND. MAYBE WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN SOMEDAY AT THE RACES. THANKS AGAIN....
BRAD
Brad,
I think it is very cool of you to share the photos of yourself to everyone in the world that would like to see them. Your dedication to the sport is dauntless! Great racing with Grossi in AZ!!! You stuck it to him in the second moto! Thanks for all the great inspiration you give to those guys that love motocross and want to get those vintage bikes out for a spin!
Here are a few questions that some folks reading yoursite might enjoy knowing your response to:

1) You seem to stay on the Open class bikes more often than any other size, in the past and present. What kept you on the Open bikes back in "the day"and now that you are racing Vintage?
2) Do you still keep in touch with many of the racers
from the 60's, 70's, and 80's? Are any of them close to getting out on the tracks again like yourself?
3) Why do you think so few of the U.S. motocross stars today take pride in racing on the GP circuit? Is the level of competition in Europe that much different than the USA?

Thanks a lot Brad for all the great times you share with the motocross fans everywhere. Peace to you!

-Greg Lacy
Alexandria, VA
HI GREG,
THANKS FOR THE REALLY KIND WORDS AND GLAD TO HEAR THAT YOU'RE ENJOYING WHAT I DO. SOMETIMES I GET A LITTLE MORE NEGATIVE RESPONSE. ANYWAY, IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTIONS, I WANT TO REPLY TO YOU PERSONALLY AND THEN POST THEM ON THE SITE AS THEY ARE REALLY GOOD QUESTIONS.
1) WHEN I STARTED RIDING AT A VERY, VERY YOUNG AGE, I LEARNED TO RDE ON A 350 BSA WITH A BULTACO MATISSE FRAME. THE FIRST BIKE I BOUGHT WAS A 360 MONTESSA AND THEN A 405 AMERICAN EAGLE WAS MY FIRST SPONSORED BIKE. SO RIGHT FROM THE GET, I WAS HOOKED ON HORSEPOWER.
2) TOM RAPP, BILLY GROSSI, BUGSY AND JEFF SMITH ARE REALLY THE ONLY GUYS THAT ARE OUT THERE CURRENTLY. BUT HOPEFULLY WE CAN DRAW SOME OF THEM OUT AGAIN WITH SOME OF OUR FUN AND ANTICS. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF MORE OF THEM WOULD SHOW UP.
3) I GUESS THEY ALL GO FOR THE EASY MONEY. LOTS OF MONEY HERE... LOTS OF HARD WORK OVER THERE.
THANKS AGAIN, HOPE YOU ENJOY THE SITE AND HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE RACES!

HEY GENE,
COOL SITE...THANKS FOR THE TIP....
BRAD
Brad,
I was a So Cal mxer from 1969-1972. Do you remember racing at Bay Mare in Camarillo back then? I think I have a picture of yousomewhere, racing there with the peace dove strapped to your handlebars. What a unique image you created for yourself in those days. Never to be imitated or out done to this day. Thanks for some great memories of such a great time in mx history.
By the way, there was the coolest CZ gas tank, that I believe could be bought through you in 1971 or so. It was a fiberglass replica or a 1969 sidepipe tank, that was narrowed by about 2 inches. That had to be the best looking gas tank ever made for CZ's. My friend Bob had the only one I ever saw then or any time after that. Do you recall the source for those tanks? It would be cool to see those become available again.
Anyway, great web site and hope to see you and some of the ol' mxers at an upcoming AHMRA event. Hey, has anyone heard the whereabouts of Jim Wilson and his Greeves? Even though he never pursued the all the glory that you achieved, he was sure cool to watch too, with those bright red suspenders and that beast of a 380...
Thanks,
Scott Hartley
HI SCOTT,
I THINK CYCLE CRAFT IN SANTA CRUZ MADE THE TANKS YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT. DON'T KNOW IF THEY ARE STILL AROUND. HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT JIM WILSON SINCE THE OLD DAYS. HE WAS FOR SURE THE FASTEST GREEVES RIDER, ALTHOUGH HE WAS A LITTLE OLDER THAN THE REST OF US. SEE YOU AT THE RACES...
BRAD

BRAD
Dear Bad Brad,
So great to see your website. I know you have heard it all before, but one of my greastest memories is from the Trans Am series, which was held at Lake Sugar Tree. At the time you were staying in Martinsville VA. and you had a Husky with a brand new part called a Fox shock. I stared at you and the Husky for hours. I was 16 at the time. I followed your career until you retired, a great one at that! Fourteen years later I was blessed with a son of my own. Needless to say I named him Brad after you. He has been racing motocross for 6 years and he is 11 years old. He has won the VA State Championship two years running. I am now 41 years old and race a Husky 125. Of all the pro riders I have met over the years you were the greatest!
Keep Roosting
Tom Haar
HI TOM,
THANKS FOR YOUR KIND WORDS AND HOPE THAT "LITTLE BRAD" CONTINUES WITH A GREAT MOTOCROSS CAREER. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE RACES AGAIN SOMEDAY.
BRAD
Brad,
First let me say thank you for the t-shirt my cousinWarren Shubin had you sign for me! I know it doesn't really matter what my name is even though it's SHUBIN!
I'm trying to find a bike torace this season and could use your help and advice. I have my eyes on a Husky 259 mag- a Pursang or possibly a CZ. I'm not sure which years are the best for the CZ so I was hoping you could give me some advice. I also could use some help in finding a race ready bike. Anysuggestions? I'm a novice rider and hopefully this will be my first year racing in AHRMA. I'm 47 years old and want to be racing open class somewhere in the near future as well. I would like to meet you while I'm working in Monterey, I'll be here a few more weeks. I hear you live in Northern California. if we could get together or talk that would be great.
Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Mark Shubin
HI MARK,
ANY CZ FROM 72 TO 74 IS GOOD AHRMA MATERIAL. THE CZ IS MUCH MORE RELIABLE AND BULLETT PROOF THAN THE BULTACO AND EVEN THE HUSKY. MAYBE WE CAN MEET AT SEARS POINT AT THE AHRMA RACE THE END OF APRIL. THE SWAP MEET ON SATURDAY WILL HAVE LOTS OF BIKES TO CHOOSE FROM.
BRAD

BRAD
Brad, I grew up in San Rafael ,and had allways driven past China Camp, but it was closed down by the time I was old enough to get my Pursang out there without my dad driving. Im getting back into it ,as a hobby and plan on riding the Elsinore Grand Prix with my nieces husband this time around. I had recently scored the Gary Semics video series, including the '' Evolution of Motocross'' They had footage of you in a race in ''northern calfornia '' It was nice to see those old China Camp hills. I scored one of your legends shirts, and would love to get one of your CZ shirts with the very cool Grateful Dead symbolism ,but Im worried that the ghost of Senior Bulto may come back to haunt me in my sleep . If I had only kept that Jim Pomeroy promo poster that I got after he won the Spanish GP , perhaps things would be better. Oh well. There was a time when you were wearing rugby jearsys when racing. Of course my buds and I had to have them also. My mom was refering to my choice of clothing as
my ''Brad Lackey wear" Anyway , If I can get past my Bultaco superiority complex, Im going to get a CZ shirt . Glad your still in the bay area.
Thanks Brad....Will
HI WILL, THANKS FOR THE NICE WORDS, CHINA CAMP WAS SOME OF THE GREATEST RIDING. GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE BUFFALO BREATH JERSEYS WE USED TO WEAR...CZECHERED PAST IS NOW "THE BRAD LACKEY WEAR." TELL MOM WE HAVE NEW FASHION...
BRAD
Brad, What's up with the cz prototype do they plan on producing a new bike if so when and where? I want one, If the bike makes it to prodution will there be any dealers in the US. My freinds all have new bikes from japan 2- yz426f's,
3- kx250's, 2- cr250's and then theres me with my 73 elsinore 250 and a 93 cr 250. I get a rash of S#!% about my old bikes and can whip most of them on my elsinore untill the triples and 130 foot table tops, Hey I'm no Brad Lackey. The bet is if I had a cz I could beat anything they can get from japan, They laughed and claim cz never built anything that could compete with the yz's, kx's and cr's, Sure hope I can ease up in the pits with a new cz ready to rip it up get them guys on the ball and lets ride.
Kenny Gould
HI KENNY,
THE BIKE IS NOT IN PRODUCTION, WE CAN ONLY HOPE. TELL THE BOYS TO BRING THEIR BIKES TO THE AHRMA NATIONALS AND GIVE IT A GO.

BRAD

BRAD
Hi Brad
I haven't written in a while so I thought I should give an update. I've been in touch with some friends who say they heard your bike was for sell but no one has been able to tell me who has it yet. I still have a couple of ace's in the hole so there's still a ghost of a chance we can still find it. Please let me know who you've tried so we don't generate any false (or more) value to an already rare bike. For that matter it may be best for me to act as the buyer. Not being a former WORLD champ does have it's advantages. But out of respect I'll leave that choice up to you, but once and/or if we find the rare beauty then let me know how you want to handle things. Well, that's all for now. I'll be in touch.
Ron Schmidt
HI RON,
I HAVE NOT REALLY CONTACTED ANYONE ABOUT THE BIKE DIRECTLY OTHER THAN PUTTING THE WORD OUT THERE. KEEP ME INFORMED IF YOU GET A LEAD AND WE CAN MAKE A PLAN AT THAT TIME. THANKS FOR THE HELP.

BRAD
Dear Brad,
We have just connected to the internet and were pleased to visit your sight. I can see from your questions and answers that you used to race at Farleigh Castle when you were a world champion I was wondering whether you would be coming across the relive these memories at the Southern Twin Shock GP on 30June and 1st July? Last year was a great success and had a good writ up in VMX it would be great to see you there. If you are interested i can get phil Stedman to email you some regs.
From Sarah -Jane
committee member for STSSC.
HI SARA JANE,
UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE A PRIOR COMMITMENT THAT WILL PREVENT ME FROM COMING TO FARLEIGH THIS YEAR. HOWEVER I WOULD LOVE TO COME IN THE FUTURE AS FARLEIGH WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TRACKS. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED ON FUTURE DATES.

THANKS ,
BRAD

BRAD (AKA LORI)

Brad,
What a wonderful surprise to find your website. I was looking at cycle news online and found it. Anyway, I have so many fond memories of watching you race. In the early 70's I lived in Florida and was 18 and just started racing. I had a Yamaha 250MX, and the first time I saw all the pros was in the Florida winter series. I am sure you remember it well, Pierre Karsmakers had just come to the states. You were on the Kawasaki team with Jimmy Weinert and I couldnt believe how fast all of you were. I was hooked! And then the Trans Am series with Ake Jonnson etc. Man those guys were fast. Those were great times, and the sport was much better than it is now, Supercross is ok, if you like straightaways and 90 degree turns all over the track. But cant compare I feel with outdoors.
Well I was always just an amateur hack trying to go fast, but I followed your career here from the states when you were in Europe. Frankly I never thought I would get the opportunity to say anything to a World Champion, but thank
the stars for the internet!
It was great when you won the world title, congratulations so many years later! I hope you will keep up your website, I plan on visiting often.
I have a cute story, one year when went to the Trans Am race in Orlando, we got there the nite before, and the teams always used to stay at this motel on hwy 50. We went in to look around, and its like 11:30 at nite and there playing pinball is Roger DeCoster, all by himself. I remember thinking here is this guy that has won World Championships playing pinball all by himself close to where I live. I wanted to ask for an autograph, but was to shy, and didnt want to disturb him. If I remember, he did quite well in the race the next day too.
Sure do miss those times.....hope you get this, and if I get a response, all the better.

Good Luck in locating that bike, and all you do,
Bob Perkett
HEY BOB,
KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR MY BIKE DOWN THERE IN FLORIDA. I'M ACTUALLY COMING TO FLORIDA THIS WEEK FOR THE AHRMA NATIONAL IN OCALA ON MARCH 4, AND WILL BE AT THE AUTISM CHARITY EVENT AT GATORBACK ON MONDAY MARCH 6. MAYBE WE'LL SEE YOU THERE. THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS ABOUT MY CAREER!
BRAD
DEAR BRAD LACKEY..
Hello,
My name is Todd C Applegate and I live in COlumbus, Ohio.. I am not a current AHRMA member...but i plan to be one very soon...
The purpose of this letter or inquiry is for several reasons.... The First one being to inform you of a 1983 or 1984 RM 465 that is for sale in the local cycle trader here in Dayton , Ohio. If you are interested in the bike, i can find out more info, but from what the ad states is that it is a RM 465 with Renthal bars and a DG PIPE
Excellent condition,
$ 1100 dollars..
Futhermore, Just a note of interest, I wasnt at the AMA when you were inducted to the Hall of fame museum but i was there last year when DANNY MAGOO CHANDLER and JOHN DESOTO were and i met both of them and i wish you had been there for i am a big fan or your career......and any american rider who ever ventured across the ocean to do the World championships in the early to mid 1980's... Ive always worn Arai helmets and SInisalo riding gear and you wore some of these items in your early career so you were an influence on me as a young adult and a rider...My first ever motorcycle purchased was a 1984 CR 125 from Dick Klamfoth who owned Honda East , which eventually went into decline and went out of business, but he was the first Honda Dealership in the USA to debut the big HONDA GOLD WING motorcycle in 1976... I remember it vividly... well, enclosed is a photo of me on my current bike, and i would love to meet you someday at an AHRMA event....
It was wonderful having the opportunity to email you this letter...
sincerely

Hello Brad, I really like your web site-very cool!
Brad I met you at the Ahrma event at Holister, it was the last National. You told me that I could get old Motocross Action Mag's from Haward Wheel Works, I think. I lost the information, i.e. phone number, address. Could you help me with getting that information again. I would really appreciate any help.

Also, Brad are there any posters of you available? I saw on yor website some pictures, but it didn't mention size-maybe i missed it.

Thanks

Ben
HI BEN, THE PICTURES ON THE WEB SITE ARE 8X10 SIZE, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR POSTERS YOU CAN CONTACT NIC JANIC AT 562-949-3377 HE HAS SOME THAT ARE AVAILABLE. He has a lot of photos and newspapers from you from the good old time. He looks a little bit like you, isnt' it? Look at the pictures. He told us a lot of storys from the "good old time" because he was also a mx driver here in switzerland. We will visite the USA in a few weeks and hope that you have a minute for us to speak and to give us a autograph for Rolf. We like to contact you in may when we stay in california.
Greetings and have a good time
